In Research and Assessment in the spring we talked briefly about developing learning outcomes. I’ve been thinking and reflecting on what learning outcomes should be in ODS. The conclusion I’ve come to is that first they need a mission statement which will then be reflected in their learning outcomes. I’ve also realized that this is an area I can work on, learning about developing mission statements and learning outcomes (something I did some work on in my summer internship with LEAP). It may be helpful to use other institutions as benchmarks, but I also think that will be difficult because the mission and outcomes should reflect a social model, which many probably do not. As I’m still learning about the language and how these models are demonstrated this will be another challenge and area for growth and development for me.
Something I realized a while ago was that in order to really measure if ODS is doing what it is supposed to be doing and meeting its goals, they need to have goals or outcomes or a mission. Last week I started working on a comparison of resources available through disability offices at each of the Big 10 schools. One of the things I found was that surprisingly few of them even have a mission statement, so at least Penn State is not alone. One of my recommendations for the Big 10, which I will give to our director is that they should all have at minimum, a mission statement, and one that reflects a social model of disability rather than medical.

This is a wonderful opportunity for you, but also seems like a lot of work for an intern to be doing. It sounds like you're thinking about all the right things, i.e. benchmarking with other Big 10s, paradigms for framing disability, the importance of language, and also starting with the mission and branching mapping everything back to that. If you need advice for this process, you may want to contact Meeghan Hollis who is in charge of Res Life's unit wide mission statement development. There is a university wide committee for co-curricular learning, I believe Kate is on with Meeghan. Maybe you can get your supervisor connected with this committee.
